My belt comes off on my 1992 Pontiac Grand Am.

Hi Steve,

The main crankshaft pulley has a wobble when running and keeps blowing belts, Do I have to replace the pulley or did it just come loose?

Thanks,
Douglas

Hi Douglas,

I assume you are talking about the crankshaft pulley? This is the pulley all the way at the bottom of the engine and usually the largest pulley.

If this pulley wobbles bad enough to throw the belt then "yes" you need to replace that pulley. The crank pulley is also called the harmonic balancer and there is a rubber insert in this pulley, what usually happens is the rubber comes apart and causes the pulley to vibrate and throw the belt.

If you need step by step instructions and illustrations on replacing the balancer pulley I offer some great online repair manuals that can give you this information. Prices start as low $9.99!! This is a great value for the information you will have access to.

I hope this is the information you are looking for, please ask if you have any more questions!
